'Research at the end of the world'
A beautiful series by photojournalist Anna Filipova that documents one of the most remote and inaccessible human settlements in the world. Ny-Ålesund is situated on the 79th parallel north on Spitsbergen island, which makes it the most northerly permanent civilian settlement's and home to one of the largest laboratory's for modern Arctic research.
'To come to the settlement you have to be either a scientist working on a project with one of the stations or maintaining the infrastructure of the place. The exceptions are rare. There are many rules and regulations here and everything is designed to restrict human activity, protect the wildlife and preserve environment.'
Known for her focus on social and environmental topics, Anna has a great eye composition and ability to capture perfect, still moments. Be sure to check out more of her projects on her website.
