Getting the word out about dyslexia — one fold at a time
BBDO Dubai create a series of tactile and playful origami posters for Sydlexia
Dyslexia is the most common learning disorder affecting 1 in every 10 people worldwide. Sydney Dyslexia (Sydlexia) is an initiative that aims to alter general perceptions that dyslexia is not a learning disability but a learning difference and thus question whether our current education methods enable those with various neurological presets to thrive at school and beyond.
Being so prevalent, many of us may have second-hand experience of the difficulties faced by those with dyslexia. The occasional missing word, the 'they're, there, their' conundrum and the 'Roy Walker approach to spelling,' "write what you hear."
Although minimal in nature, the Sydlexia logomark is embedded in understanding around how dyslexics often rearrange letters. This conceptual artistry becomes the basis for the origami poster series where, primarily, each poster consists of an assumedly random, non-sensical "pattern" — a creative exaggeration of how even small words can appear to dyslexic children — which can then be solved by following supplied folding tutorials.
This design's biggest merit is that it intrigues us. It sets us a puzzle and hints at the solution with partially recognisable sections of words prompting us to engage and become aware.
